This (prototypical) map shows information that is of interest for sailors in Second Life.
This application uses OpenLayers. OpenLayers is a javascript library to display maps. Thus you need javascript enabled.
Javascript is a beast and different browsers deal differently with it. Result: I test with firefox and everything works. Jane Fosset tested with Chrome and found it working. Jane Fosset also reported that her Internet Explorer doesn't work. Thus expect good results only with Firefox right now. But other browsers should work good enough to show you the idea.
Please note, that the overlays currently are only available for some zoom levels.
Usage
Use the + and - buttons at the left hand side to zoom in and out.
Use the mouse (left-click and hold) or the pan control to move the map.
Use the layer switcher (the plus-sign at the right hand side) to open a list of possible map layers. Check them to display them.
Available layers
Depths: shows a map where the depth information is emphasized. The deeper the blue, the deeper the water. The areas with a red tone are less than a meter deep.
Rezzing areas: Areas that are green allow to rezz a boat. Note: This does not necessarily mean "permanent rezzing". Autoreturn may well be enabled in these areas.
Banned parcels: Shows areas that should be avoided with a boat as they are surrounded by ban lines. Still to be done: Show areas that allow object entry but disable scripts.
Parcel names: This is only be shown at the closest zoom level.
Printing is currently under development. All layers are supported now but only the closest zoom layer will give you a good result.
