Getting started
You probably are new when you are reading all this. So here are a few answers to the questions you might have:
What's this all about?
This is a site to collect and organize information about sailing in Second Life. It's intended to provide information for people of every level of experience, from the curious who just want to know what it's all about, to the experienced sailors who want advanced or specialized knowledge.
Note that this web site is dedicated to sailing in Second Life, not to sailing in any particular area in Second Life. It is not affiliated to any club, estate or whatever else.
EVERYBODY is free (and explicitly invited) to use this web site and contribute.
What is a wiki at all?
Well, there are several ways to publish information on the net.
- Classic web sites: They publish information and that's it.
- Forums: They are good to start discussions, talk to people. But current issues scroll out of scope pretty soon.
- Blogs: They let some people give you information, but this information is mostly a one way street.
- Wikis: They give you (more or less) structured, semi-static information. But if you don't like what you see or find soemthing missing and you want to enhance it, you can. A much better and much more thorough definition and description can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki
Why another web site?
Well, you might say "Oh my, so many web sites around. Why do we need another one?". But if you look at the other web sites you will find that there are either sites where few address many or given information is scrolling out of scope pretty fast (or both). You will also find that some web sites are specific for certain regions in SL.
This Wiki is aiming at becoming a source of integrating all that. It can become the the portal for your sailing experience.
How can I use it?
As a reader: Just go ahead. You will not find much difference to any other web site. Reading is free for everybody.
As a writer: Read the next section
How can I contribute?
You find something missing? Wrong? You want to improve things? Nothing easier than that.
Get an account and start typing.
There is no such thing as a rule that says "You shall not change other peoples contribution!". The only rule is to be polite with them. They did their best and in good intention. But please accept that other people might have other opinions. If you don't like an opinion expressed here express your opinion beside it but do not wipe the other out.
Read the Contributing page in advance.
Is there a manual?
Yes there is. Look here User's Guide for information on using the wiki software.
