Glossary of Terms

A
Aft -- Towards the stern of the yacht.
Apparent Wind -- the wind felt by the avatar on-board a moving yacht. The apparent wind varies depending on true wind and the vessels course and speed.
AYC -- Alternate Yacht Club

Bow -- The front of the yacht.

Dinghy -- Refers to a small racing yachts or recreational open sailing boat.

Fetch -- Sailing to a location accurately without having to tack. Also the distance Wind and Wave can travel without encountering land. (The second definition is meaningless in SL.)
FIYC -- Fishers Island Yacht Club
Flying Fizz -- a dinghy commonly used in SL.
Flying Tako -- a dinghy commonly used in SL.

Hot Lap -- A solo timed run of a course whose result is sometimes posted on the web.

MBYC -- Mowry Bay Yacht Club

NYC -- Nantucket Yacht Club

Port -- The left side of the yacht when facing forward.

Race Wind -- is the "wind" usually used in SL to drive your yacht. Race wind is set up by Wind Setters.

Starboard -- The right side of the yacht when facing forward.
Stern -- The rear of the yacht.
SYC -- Starboards Yacht Club

Tako -- a dinghy commonly used in SL.
TYC -- Tradewinds Yacht Club
True Wind -- is the actual wind direction, irregardless of yacht movement. While sailing in SL this is usually Race Wind. See also Apparent Wind.

VYC -- Vagabonds Yacht Club

WYC -- WayPoint Yacht Club
Wind Setter -- Device that defines wind for yachts to use in place of SL default wind.

Yacht -- A yacht is a recreational boat.
