Essentially Hot Laps are solo racing against the clock.
You pick a boat start line and course.
Start the clock at the start line
Run the course.
Optionally you can record your results on slsailing.org.
(Get results from the start line and post them to the appropriate forum.)

Results are collected, collated and sorted by various volunteers. Typically hot lap results are correlated on a monthly basis.

NYC has a course dedicated for hot laps. (As of April 2008.)
