Wind Setter

Wind setters are little devices that broadcast wind settings.

Usually they come paired with a Start Line and are quite unobtrusive.

You have to be close to notice them at all. The one shown below is blue because it is "on". A red wind setter is "off".

Use the wind setter "wind" for your boat

To sail using the settings distributed by a wind setter you only need to sail close enough to it. If you are within a range of 100 meter of a wind setter the boat will catch the settings and use them. That's it.

Changing the settings the wind setter uses

Most wind setters in SL are set to a group. You can discover its group by right-clicking on it and selecting "Edit". You can only operate them when you are a member of the same group (and have this group tag active). The wind setter accepts commands on channel 44, so you need to begin each command to the wind setter with "/44".

Try "/44help" to see, if the wind setter is accepting from you.

This also gives you a list of commands, the wind setter understands.

What is the wind setter not doing?

The wind setter is not distributing the current wind. It would be quite impossible for one single wind setter to govern the wind over a complete race course. The connection to the boats is done by "shouting" which has a range of 100 (96 exactly) meters. Every boat out of this distance can't communicate with the wind setter.

What is the wind setter doing?

The wind setter provides an interface between the user and the boats coming by. The user (race director, club commodore, ...) sets the parameters for the wind (see also ...) and the wind setter stores this.

It then broadcasts the wind settings constantly to every boat around.

The wind setter is not converting the settings into current wind, this is done by the boat itself and the algorithm chosen is up to the boat designer. Unfortunately that leaves room for interpretation so that different boat types indeed sail with different wind even when seeing the same wind settings.

Different versions

There are different versions out but they are all identical in respect to the string sent to the boats. They only differ in details of their user "interface" such that later versions are more comfortable.

Where to purchase the wind setter

The wind setter is sold at the NYC loft. If you are interested to have your own vendor at your location IM Cynthia Centaur in world.
