Advanced Features

The Zinnemann 40 has several features that are at the time of writing unique among vessels primarily due to it's web integration. Essentially on every rez or reset the boat talks to the Zinnemann servers and exchange data which can be read or written to from the main Zinnemann website. This gives the boat a number of abilities, logging is optional depending on your preferences and allows privacy.

  • Travel Logging: The distance, time and average speed covered by the boat is recorded and is viewable from the website
  • Location logging: The boat reports its last location and in major sailing areas the website can provide a map of its location.
  • Race Following: Boats in a race (such as the Big Cat Cups) can be followed around the course from the website with location updating every 60 seconds
  • User Preferences: Race ID is set on the boat from information entered into the website
  • Guest list: A guest list is maintained on the website which allows non-owners to captain a Zinnemann 40 with the owners permission
  • Textures: Texture UIDs can also be added into the website, allowing quick and easy changing of several surfaces that carry across all boats (so an upgrade doesn't have to have textures reapplied and changing textures is little more than pasting the new textures UID into the website)

Non web integrated features also exist

  • Texture templates for many surfaces on the boat are available from the Zinnemann website in psd format with multiple layers, to allow personalization.

Racing Information

Handling

The Zinnemann 40 was designed to simulate a class that sails in moderate wind conditions, as a result normally races are at wind speed 18 rather than the usual 11. Given that limitation it is extremely fast (speeds in excess of 40M/s have been reached) has a fairly even sail modal apart from direct upwind/downwind. It is not a fast turner though the latest version (1.5) has provided a noticeable improvement in it's turning circle.

Handicap

Jane's Handicap Score: 1.35

Known Races

Every quarter, the designer hosts an 8 regatta series (4 races per regatta) called the Big Cat Cup, known for its intricate courses, high speeds, and good competition. More details are available at the Big Cat Cup Website
